Volvo XC90 high performance version in the works

Summary

Volvo is working on a more powerful version of the latest XC90 4x4, according to numerous online reports.

Rumours that Volvo were thinking of making a performance-tuned version of the latest XC90 emerged during the first quarter of this year. To make it quicker, the XC90 is set to receive a chassis upgrade and new power boosting components courtesy of Polestar, which was fully taken over by Volvo back in July.

It has recently been reported that Polestar are developing an all-new four-cylinder petrol engine that’ll produce at least 350bhp. This new unit, is set to arrive not just for the XC90, but will also replace the engines used in the Polestar versions of the S60 and V60. Both currently use a turbocharged straight-six petrol engine with around 345bhp.

While the XC90 is set to add a new performance-enhanced model to its range, it is currently unconfirmed as to whether Volvo intend to specifically call it the XC90 Polestar. The idea, however, is believed to be under consideration by Volvo.

The Swedish manufacturer is also reportedly considering a separate, high-performance hybrid version of the XC90. Currently, the XC90 is available with a T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain which combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine and electric motor to produce a combined output of 395bhp.

Likely rivals for a high-performance version of the Volvo XC90 would include the BMW X5 M, Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport.
