Volkswagen Up falls in lowest insurance group

The new Volkswagen Up! will offer three models in the lowest insurance group available in the UK, the car maker has revealed.

The small, three-door city car will come with three options that will ensure lower insurance for buyers.

The entry-level 1.0-litre 60PS model in 'Take up!' trim level will be the first to be available in insurance group 1E. However, Move up! models with the same engine will also fall into the same insurance category.

This includes Move up! models with BlueMotion technology, Volkswagen's low-CO2-emitting model, which also benefits from emissions low enough to qualify for zero UK road tax.

The Volkswagen Up! is the latest small car from Volkswagen and a successor to the likes of the Volkswagen Fox and the Volkswagen Lupo before that.

However, it comes with an entirely new design, new engines, new interiors and a leap forward in safety technology over its predecessors and is a completely new car in its own right.

The Volkswagen Up! will have two sister cars - the rebadged Seat Mii and the Skoda Citigo. Each will have tweaks to their designs and differences in equipment and upholstery.

Once launched, it will go up against the likes of the Kia Picanto, Fiat 500, Ford Ka and the forthcoming Vauxhall Junior, which goes on sale in 2013.

The Volkswagen Up! is expected to arrive in UK dealerships from March 2012 with a price under £8,000 for entry-level models.
