Volkswagen reveals new up! city car
Summary
Volkswagen has revealed its new small car, the up! city car, ahead of its world debut next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The Volkswagen up! has been in the pipeline for several years now and with the popularity of small cars on the rise, the German car maker has decided to launch it before the end of the year in Europe.
The three-door, four-seat car boasts a raised roofline towards the back in order to give rear passengers more headroom - an important feature given the compact dimensions of the car.
However, its small size means it can make the best use of Volkswagen's new generation of three-cylinder petrol engines, including a 60PS and 70PS configuration.
The engines, says Volkswagen, will follow the likes of Fiat in delivering sub-100g/km of CO2 emissions from a petrol unit, meaning the up! will be eligible for zero Vehicle Excise Duty and exemption from the London congestion charge.
Volkswagen has also announced plans to introduce an electric model in future, making it the first VW-branded model to use the alternative energy in the UK.
Other features on the Volkswagen up! include a system to prevent the car colliding with anything at low speeds by automatically applying the brakes and an all-in-one navigations and entertainment system in higher spec models.
Volkswagen will offer three different levels of equipment with the new small car, named take up!, move up! and the range-topping high up!.
However, it also plans to introduce two special editions - up! Black and up! White - from launch in the UK.
Inside, Volkswagen says the up! will have a colourful interior to match the specification and exterior colour, but full details, including price, will not be announced until the official launch of the new Volkswagen up!.
