The Volkswagen Golf has been labelled the ‘safest car 2009’ by the EuroNCAP institute after it was awarded a five-star safety rating.

The Golf was tested on occupant protection of adults, protection of children, pedestrian protection and supporting safety and driver assistance systems as part of the EuroNCAP testing programme.

During 2009, 32 others cars were tested by EuroNCAP, with the Volkswagen Golf finishing with the highest safety rating.

The car initially received a five-star rating in 2008, but was re-tested using new, stricter criteria where once again the Golf was given a five-star rating.

The Golf features ESP, ABS with braking assistance, a knee airbag for the driver and a head airbag system for front and rear passengers amongst other safety features.
