Suzuki's European plant celebrates 20th Birthday
Summary
Suzuki is celebrating an impressive milestone after its sole-European plant passed the 20 year mark.
Set-up initially in 1992, the Hungarian plant has produced nearly two million vehicles in a little over two decades of operations.
The Magyar Suzuki Corporation has built a number of models in that time and it currently produces the Splash, SX4 and the Swift hatchback for distribution to the UK.
The Swift was in fact the first model to roll off the Hungarian production line – situated just North of Budapest - in 1992.
In 2008 the factory produced 280,000 vehicles for the year however it has been unable to surpass that mark since with the economic recession reducing output to 170,000 units in 2010.
Despite the slowing of demand and production volumes, the plant still employs some 3,500 people and Suzuki is quick to point out its benefits for the Hungarian economy and to the company itself.
In terms of production, all models built at the plant come with Euro V compliant engines and the majority of vehicles are exported to mainland Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
It has been a year of milestones for the Japanese company after the Swift – the manufacturer’s excellent hatchback – cleared two million sales worldwide in little more than six years on the market.
