Porsche unveils 911 Black Edition
Summary
Porsche has taken the wraps off a limited 911 Black Edition set for release in April 2011.
Priced from £67,270 for the coupe and £74,958 for the Cabriolet, the special edition model will add an array of cosmetic touches whilst retaining a powerful Carrera flat-six cylinder engine.
Just 1,911 units will be commissioned by Porsche and available in just two exterior finishes of plain black or Basalt Black metallic.
The stylish model will sit on 19-inch 911 Turbo II forged alloy wheels with a gloss finish whilst exposing the brake discs – signalling the typically sporting intent of the 911.
As you’d expect of a model called ‘Black Edition’ – its black – on the interior as well as exterior.
Inside there is black leather upholstery and a black central dash, contrasted by aluminium-look paint that adorns the air vents and gear lever.
Porsche is promoting the 911 Black Edition as one with a high quality interior and specification. To that end the 911 comes fitted with a BOSE Surround Sound-System as standard, satellite navigation and a universal audio interface for MP3 players completes its multimedia arrangement.
In terms of driver aids, the limited-run 911 features rear ParkAssist, cruise control and the elaborately phrased automatic dimming anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors.
As with any Porsche the focus is on the engine and the Black Edition is equipped with a potent 345bhp Carrera flat-six cylinder engine mated to a six-speed gearbox. The 3.7-litre engine enables the coupe to clear 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds while the cabriolet is slightly slower at 5.1 seconds.
Fuel consumption figures make for less enjoyable reading, standing at 29.4mpg and 28.5mpg respectively.
The sporting intent of the model is exaggerated by Porsche’s ‘Launch Control’ system that allows the driver to experience the fastest possible acceleration which the German marque says shaves 0.2 seconds off acceleration times when coupled to a Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch gearbox.
