One in 10 learner drivers don’t know how to do the simplest maintenance tasks on their cars, with 13 per cent failing the “show me, tell me" Vehicle Safety Checks.

The tests were introduced to the driving test in 2003 and feature simple questions such as ‘show me how you would check the engine oil’ and ‘tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working’.

The Vehicle Safety Check failure figure has increased by three per cent since new questions were introduced in July last year.
