New Volkswagen Touareg SUV
Volkswagen has released details of the new 4x4 Touareg SUV, complete with an all-new hybrid engine version.
The hybrid Touareg engine offers fuel economy of 34mpg. It consists of an electric generator, capable of producing speeds of 31mph when operated independently, and a 3.3-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine.
Together, the hybrid is capable of giving the petrol engine a boost, particularly when overtaking, providing a top speed of 149mpg.
The other engines available are a 3.0-litre petrol – expected to be the biggest seller in the range - and top of the range 4.2-litre TDI diesel producing 590lbs ft of torque.
The new Touareg is longer, lighter and lower than previous models and features an eight-speed transmission and start/stop technology.
Inside, the interior has been updated and refreshed. The five-seats have been given more legroom due to a longer wheelbase while the boot measures 580-litres (1,624 with the rear seats folded).
Although available in SE, Altitude, Hybrid and Escape versions, no prices have been released for the
Volkswagen Touareg. The first models are due for UK delivery in august 2010.
