BMW reveals 6 Series details
Summary
BMW has revealed details for its 2011 6 Series convertible.
BMW’s flagship convertible has a lot to live up to after the German manufacturer stated its vehicle offers “a unique blend of distinctive styling, luxury and sporting performance."
To this end the 6 Series has received a host of upgrades and revisions over its predecessor including a new exterior design, powertrains and specification levels.
The 6 Series features a long sweeping bonnet and a “set-back" passenger compartment that along with the convertibles forward-slanted grille and contoured bonnet creates the a distinctive wedge shape.
BMW says the cars waistline is influenced by a boat deck, which has not translated into the inclusion of decking but the use of chrome trim on the cars exterior- particularly around the xenon headlights.
Its roof is multi-layered to optimise acoustics, temperature and structural rigidity in the car separated by fins. According to BMW this means the roof-body transition is as smooth as a coupe.
The roof is operated by a button on the centre console or remote control and can be lowered in 24 seconds and opened in 19.
The interior is more spacious than alternative 2+2’s while the cabin also plays host to BMW’s iDrive control system.
Under the bonnet the 6 Series is available with two petrol engines in the form of the 650i and the 640i. The 650i is a 4.4-litre V8 engine capable of delivering 407bhp and clearing 0-62mph in five seconds.
BMW’s 640i is the smaller of the two at 3.0-litres and 320bhp however it is only fractionally slower than the larger variant with a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds.
Due to the performance nature of the engines, both work in combination with BMW EfficientDynamics systems to reduce fuel consumption and emissions including Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering and lightweight engine construction.
The chassis has also been remodelled to include Drive Dynamic Control which allows users to choose how responsive they want their 6 Series to be in terms of transmission, steering and throttle.
Equipment levels on the convertible are extensive with options such as BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition, Lane Change Warning and Parking Assist all available on the 6 Series for the first time.
The 6 Series is on sale in the UK from 26 March 2011 with prices to be confirmed at a later date.
