New Car Sales Data – Sep 2009
New car sales (registrations) were up for the third consecutive month in September, increasing 11.4% to 367,929 vehicles. The Government Scrappage Scheme is felt to still be the driving force behind the new car sales upturn, especially as small car sales to private buyers continue to be strong.
September 2009 New Car Sales Data Main Points
Once again the new car registrations outperformed their forecast, delivering growth of 11.4% against an expected 2.5% forecast figure. Last September was quite weak though so the levels of growth should not be taken out of context. New car sales were up by nearly 30,000 units compared with last year, but more than 50,000 units down when compared with 2007.
With the new number plate September is expected to be the best performing month for new car sales this year. For the last five years March has been the best car sales month so it is felt that, even though caution should be applied, there could be signs of improvement going into the last quarter of the year.
Demand from private buyers continues to outpace the rest of the market, up by more than 41% and now less than 2% away from last year’s performance.
The demand for eco-friendly new cars and reduced CO2 emissions also continues to grow. Alternative fuel new car sales were up by more than 45% while the average CO2 emissions figure for all new cars sold is now 150.2g/km year to date. This is just short of 5% lower than the 2008 figure and nearly 21% less than the annual average for 2007.
